The Azalea Bonsai comes from Japan and is a member of the Ericaceae family, a shrub that can be deciduous or evergreen, depending on the variety, with bright green oval leaves.
This bonsai is highly prized for its flowering, which in some varieties can be different shades on the same plant. The most popular variety is the "Satsuki", which comes from Kanuma, where the specific soil for Azaleas is collected.
Rhododendron indicum
Azalea indica, Azaleia, Azálea
Place it outside, where it gets 2-3 hours of direct sunlight a day (ideally in the morning or late afternoon), protected from strong winds and frost. During flowering we should protect it from direct rain (but always outside) which will cause the flowers to wilt.
Very abundant during flowering. As it is sensitive to limescale, we should use good quality water (mineral water at the end of the line) and avoid wetting the leaves. Water the soil abundantly until enough water comes out of the drainage holes to evenly moisten the soil, always from above and never by immersion, using a fine-drained watering can (there are specific ones for Bonsai). Allow the top layer of soil to dry out slightly between each watering (to check if the plant needs water, touch the soil with your fingers). If you have a dish under the Bonsai, never leave any water in it (to prevent the roots from rotting). There is no advantage in spraying the leaves, only do it on the days you fertilize, and only if the fertilizer is for foliar application, but make sure they arrive dry at night to avoid fungus.
From February to October, with "Fertil Bonsai" (fortnightly) and "Bio Bonsai" (fortnightly), reinforcements should be made with "Micro Bonsai" and "Ferro Bonsai" as the pH of the water tends to hinder the assimilation of micronutrients.
Unlike most trees, it doesn't have apical dominance, so you always have to leave "green mass" at the apex. You should clean the new shoots that cover the flowers before they open so that the direct sun stimulates them and the formation of leaf buds around the flower bud. After flowering, select 2 well-located buds from the several that sprout from the place where it bloomed and remove the floral ovaries (small fruits that appear in the flower area) because if you leave them, the plant will wear out and may even die.
If necessary, you can transplant with "Terra Bonsai - Azaleas" or pure "Kanuma" after flowering in May/June together with the training pruning. For worn-out plants, we'll do it in February/March, but we'll remove all the flower buds to prevent the flowering from wearing off. We recommend using "Rhiza Bonsai" when transplanting, because although azaleas only mycorrhize with specific spores that are not present in the product, they benefit from all the other phytofortifiers and biostimulants present.
Prune from October until spring and after flowering (May to August). If the bouquets are poorly formed, they will all break off. Always plow it very carefully as the Azalea is very brittle.
