There are several species of Ficus grown in Bonsai. This species belongs to the Moraceae family and is native to China and India, but the care is practically the same. They all have medium-sized evergreen leaves.
The aspect that most attracts Bonsaistas is its high resistance (it is often said that "you need a degree to kill a Ficus!"), combined with the beauty of the bark and aerial roots it can emit.
Ficus Retusa
Benjamin's fig
Indoors next to a window where it gets 2-3 hours of direct sunlight a day, without curtains or blinds cutting off the light, rotated 180º every week, it can spend the hot months outside while maintaining 2-3 hours of direct sunlight.
Water the soil abundantly until enough water comes out of the drainage holes, in order to evenly moisten the soil always from above, never by immersion, with a fine-drained watering can (there are specific ones for Bonsai). Allow the top layer of soil to dry out slightly between each watering (to check if the plant needs water, touch the soil with your fingers). If you have a dish under the Bonsai, never leave any water in it (to prevent the roots from rotting). There's no point in spraying the leaves, do it only on the days you fertilize it, and only if the fertilizer is for foliar application, but make sure they arrive dry at night to avoid fungus.
From February to November with "Fertil Bonsai" and "Bio Bonsai" all year round, reinforcing with "Micro Bonsai" and sometimes "Ferro Bonsai" also from February to November, as it is a plant with a high consumption of micronutrients.
Given the large size of its leaves, it should always be controlled by "Metsumi" at the start of budding. Training pruning is usually done after defoliation in June/July, when we take the opportunity to prune and transplant. When cut, it releases latex, which is well "stopped" by spraying the plant with water.
With "Terra Bonsai-Folhosas" and "Rhiza Bonsai" in May/June (mid-July at the latest), after defoliation (defoliation, pruning, trellising and transplanting, all in a row).
With defoliation in the hot months, particularly June/July, it is a very hardy plant that can withstand heavy work and always responds well, as long as it is healthy.
