Originally from China and Korea, the Bonsai Podocarpus belongs to the Podocarpaceae family. It is an evergreen tree with long, oval, shiny dark green leaves arranged in a spiral around the bouquets.
It is a dioecious plant with male and female flowers on separate trees. There is no easy differentiation, but some females can bear fruit, a purplish berry similar to a grape, which appears after flowering in shades of yellow (in spring), the fruit is edible.
Commonly known as the "Bearded Pine", it is widely used in Japanese gardens and Feng Shui lovers attribute many positive properties to it. It is also very popular in gardening, whether in hedges or even as shade trees (it can reach 20 meters) due to its great resistance and low maintenance.
Podocarpus macrophylus
Podocarpus, Yew Plum Pine, Kusamaki, Japanese Yew
Although many websites refer to it as an indoor plant, in our climate it needs to live outside, always well exposed to the sun, where it gets 2-3 hours of direct sunlight a day (ideally in the morning or at the end of the day).
Water the soil abundantly until enough water comes out of the drainage holes to evenly moisten the soil, always from above (never by immersion), with a watering can with very fine drains (there are specific ones for Bonsai). Allow the top layer of soil to dry out between each watering (to check if the plant needs water, touch the soil with your fingers), although it consumes some water, it doesn't like to be too "soggy". If you have a dish under the Bonsai, never leave any water in it (to prevent the roots from rotting). There is no advantage in spraying the leaves, only do it on days when you fertilize and if the fertilizer is specifically for foliar application, but make sure they arrive dry at night to avoid fungus.
Keep it protected from strong winds and frost. You should move it indoors temporarily in the event of extreme frost and prolonged temperature drops (below 0ºC).
From February to October/November, with "Fertil bonsai" and "Bio bonsai".
It is done above a whorl of leaves, trying not to cut the leaves in half. Pruning can be done at any time of the year, it re-sprouts well after pruning (back budding), and it compacts very well.
Although it's a conifer, "Terra Bonsai-Folhosas" and "RhizaBonsai" are used in February/March, before bud break, we usually prune a few legs and remove some old leaves, when transplanting at the roots there are small balls along the root, it's not a problem, it's a symbiotic relationship between the plant and a fungus. Recently, a study identified these little balls as "Rhizobium", the same fungus that has a symbolic relationship with legumes (bean plants, etc.) and facilitates their capture, fixation and assimilation of nitrogen. This relationship is not common in other plant species, and perhaps this is the only conifer to have it.
As it is very flexible, it can be wired all year round, but you have to be careful not to damage the leaves too much as the wire passes through.
