The Bonsai Pyracantha belongs to the Rosaceae family, which originated in Asia. It is a vigorously growing shrub with evergreen leaves, much appreciated for its abundant white flowers, followed by fruits that range from yellow to red.
Pyracantha spp.
Firethorn, Garden Hawthorn, Pyracantha, Pyracantha, Firethorn
It is very resistant to both cold and heat, so it should be kept outdoors in full sun all year round, where it gets 2-3 hours of direct sunlight a day (ideally in the morning or at the end of the day), protected from strong winds and frost.
Water the soil abundantly until enough water comes out of the drainage holes to evenly moisten the soil, always from above (never by immersion), with a watering can with very fine drains (there are specific ones for Bonsai). Allow the top layer of soil to dry out between each watering (to check if the plant needs water, touch the soil with your fingers). It resists thirst well, but consumes a lot of water, especially when in flower or fruit. If you have a dish under the Bonsai, never leave any water in it (to prevent the roots from rotting). There is no advantage in spraying the leaves, only do it on days when you fertilize and if the fertilizer is specifically for foliar application, but make sure they arrive dry at night to avoid fungus.
High nutrient consumption, fertilize from February to October/November with "Bio bonsai" and "Fertil bonsai". It appreciates reinforcement with "Ferro Bonsai", and benefits from the application of "P/K Bonsai" to stimulate flowering.
You have to be especially careful with the spikes. Although it grows slowly, it produces a tangle of very dense bouquets . Normally, you take advantage of the end of winter, after the fruit has fallen, to clean up the pruning and lower the crown. The new shoots that emerge during the growth phase should be allowed to grow 5 to 6 leaves and then pruned back to the first leaf.
With "Terra Bonsai-Folhosas" and "Rhiza Bonsai" in February, with heavy pruning and/or partial defoliation.
It is usually pruned, but it responds well to trellising, so you can do it all year round.
